I was at Lynn Terry’s forum and Phil was asking how to add RSS feeds to a website.
Here’s my response to the question:
“Phil,
There are many places where you can find feeds. Sites like My Yahoo! or My MSN offer feeds. Or any sites where you see the RSS or XML icon. You can set up a blog reader like Bloglines or you can add feeds to your My Yahoo! account. Then you just subscribe to the feeds that are of interest to you.
For example, if you go to my marketing blog, you will see in the right hand side an icon that says “add feed to MyYahoo”. If you click on that, you’ll be able to automatically add the feed to your account and get updates everytime there is a new post.”
But I misunderstood Phil’s question (thanks to Lynn’s clarification). What he wanted to know was how to add feeds to a website not just Yahoo or MSN.
So I wrote:
“I use RSS Equalizer and it’s simple to add the feeds to my site. It’s a PHP script (and uses mySQL database). So you just have to add a few lines of code to your site and specify the feed you want to show.”
If you want to see what the feeds look like when they’re added to your page, I’ve set up a sample page with RSS feeds here.
RSS Equalizer is a pretty nifty tool that lets you add any RSS feed to your website. If the feed allows you to specify a keyword, then you can customize the articles that you want to show up on your website. For example, if you want a page showing a news feed on “animal resuce” and another on “child sponsorship”, you can specify the keywords for different pages.
Since it’s introduction last year, RSS Equalizer has gone through a few iterations, and the latest version is very easy to install even for someone who is not entirely technical.
What you need is a webhost that supports mySQL and php version 4.0 and up. The only manual work you have to do is unzip the package, create a directory in your server, upload the files, and then set up an SQL database.
Once you have that done, you just run the setup file and everything is self explanatory.
