I read this interesting thread at SearchEngineWatch’s Adwords forum. The question posed was whether Google was limiting the number of keywords for the ad campaigns. According to an Adwords representative who replied to the post, it is true that Google is setting new limits on the number of keywords that advertisers can use to make sure that they are properly targeted. However, the limit is variable and dependent on “how successfully keywords have been used in the account to date.”
This seems to be a drawback for newer Adwords users who may not be well versed in writing well targeted ads and finding related keywords. So I suggest starting your new campaigns small and using [ ] to better target your keywords at first. Get a decent CTR and then expand your keyword list. What I’m saying is, don’t go crazy putting up 2000 keywords for your new campaigns… well, unless they are super-targeted.

Google AdWords Keyword Tool
There is a new keyword tool in your AdWords account, in case you haven't noticed. Once you're logged in, click on the ad group and you should see a link for 'Keyword Tool' right above the table. The tool lets you generate variations of keywords from your best performing keywords.

1I have 4000 keywords with no problems. So where’s that limit then?
