I’ve got my subscription to Yahoo Music Unlimited and I’m having a blast! For a monthly fee of $6.99 ($4.99 if you pay for a year in advance), you can have access to over a million songs and also download them to your MP3 player (I’m using the iRiver H10 - great device, by the way). However there is a catch. If you stop your membership, those songs will not work anymore. How’s that for hooking you in?
Over the long run, I think it’s still a better deal than Apple’s iTunes where you pay 99 cents per song.
All those songs from the late 80’s are my favorites. Big hair bands, you name it. What I’ve noticed is that Yahoo has incorporated viral marketing into their product. When you are playing a song, you can send an IM to a friend to recommend that song.
Songs have a way to inspire us and also trigger memories from times past. Haven’t you ever felt that way? Sometimes a song will come on the radio and you’ll suddenly remember events or people that you associate with that song as if something lodged deep in your memory has resurfaced. Songs are powerful. People like to share songs. Yahoo has got it right.
