The Search by John Battelle I heard about John Battelle’s new book The Search which I wanted to read, so I ordered a copy from Amazon. This book isn’t just about Google but the overall phenomenon of “searching” which is now ingrained into our culture.

How many times do you search on a daily basis? On the other hand, from a marketer’s perspective, getting an insight into what people are searching for can reveal niche markets previously unknown. On example is if you are tracking the keywords that people are typing in to find your website. You can look at them by checking your website statistics. Most web hosting companies use Cpanel which has either Webalizer or Awstats installed. Using either of these programs, you can compile all the keywords and phrases that are leading people to your site.

Analyze those keywords and modify your site to better fit what your visitors are looking for. Add more pages, more content, etc. If people find what they want, chances are they’ll make a mental note to come back to your website. I’m a student of web psychology, if there’s such a thing. I like to find out the psychology behind every click - what leads people to my sites and what makes them stay.
