Splogs or spam blogs can be broken down into two types according to this article in MediaPost: link blogs and reblogs.

Spam blogs generally fall into one of two categories: Link farms, which pack hundreds or even thousands of blogs with gibberish or recycled content, and contain multiple links to a particular Web site, which allow them to game Google’s PageRank algorithm, creating artificially high organic search rankings; and spam blogs that simply recycle content with AdSense or other advertising on them in the hopes of making money from errant users clicking on the ads.

According to a post in Google’s Buzz blog, blog owners may be prompted with a word verification system or “CAPTCHA” (why’s it called that?) to fight against automated posting systems.

Another thing I’ve been seeing a lot with one of my WP blogs is comment spam. I’ve turned on comment moderation so that I can filter out the spam comments. But in the last few days I’ve been getting a whole bunch.

I got some comment spam with my Blogger blogs as well but after I turned on the word verification, things have gotten a lot better. You can turn on word verification if you look in the “template” section of the dashboard and look under “comments”.
