As most marketers will tell you, it’s important to research your market BEFORE you decide to become a player in it. You can learn a lot about a market through magazines. Look at what people are reading, who’s reading what, and what they would be willing to spend.
Go to this page and you will see a list of available publications that you can bid on for your print ad to appear in. But there’s more. Click on Martha Stewart Living and you will see some stats about the circulation and profile of subscribers to this magazine. For example, you’ll see that it has a circulation of 1.8 million, 87% female readers, 69% with college education, an average age of 46, and an average household income of about $68,000. On the other hand, PC Magazine has a male-dominated readership. No surprise there.
One interesting observation is that MacAddict has more college-educated readers than PC Magazine or PC World. Hmm… go figure.
Basically, the higher the average household income, the more disposable income they have to spend on products. You can use this information to gauge to viability of your target market. For example, PC Photo readers have an average household income of over $100,000. That’s why you’ll find so many websites about digital camera reviews. It’s a lucrative market.
