Secret To Get On The First Page Of Google
It happened today. I got an email from YPN letting me know that my account has been terminated. Funny thing is, I’ve been a publisher since around Sep. 05. And yes, they’ve even sent me a Christmas present one year. I’ve not resorted to anything that’s against the TOS of YPN and I haven’t made any changes to my sites or added YPN to new sites for quite a few months now. My earnings have been steadily declining the past few months and in fact I have already switched a lot of my sites back to AdSense.
Here’s part of the message:
“Unfortunately, due to poor traffic quality, we have terminated your Yahoo! Publisher Network account ID XXXXXXXXXX”
Funny thing is, the quality of ad targeting is so poor in the past few months that I had already moved many sites back to AdSense. I just can’t figure out why Yahoo can’t get their act together. Is it any wonder that their stock is doing poorly compared to Google? Or that the expected increased earnings from the launch of YPN hasn’t materialized? Yahoo stock holders should take note. At the rate YPN is terminating publishers, it’s no wonder that they aren’t seeing increased earnings. After all, each terminated publisher means less revenue for Yahoo.
I have plotted out the earnings trend for 2006 (top) and 2007 (bottom). As you can see, the numbers are quite erratic. The horizontal grid lines represent the same dollar amount so you can see that earnings have been, on average, steadily declining.

The CTR for YPN ads have never matched those of AdSense on my sites, even for sites where I’ve been running AdSense for a long time and replaced them with YPN as a test. I was hoping that things would start to improve with YPN’s ad targeting but so far it hasn’t happened. Actually, I’ve noticed that things have gotten worse recently.
Oh well… adios YPN! It was a nice additional stream of income while it lasted.

1Hock,
that really sucks. I heard similar stories from others that they sent them warning letters, but not booted from YPN.
That makes me worry, because my CTR is really low because of their poor targeting. But still, on those sites, YPN makes me way more money compared to Adsense.
btw.. Your blog is getting published at Bumpzee, hope you don’t mind

2It seems that everyone is complaining about ad targeting and with untargeted ads, I just don’t see how publishers can increase their CTR. Then because you have low CTR, the folks at YPN think that your traffic quality is poor and they shut you down. It’s a downward spiral.
I just found that Miva has a contextual ad system now. I’m going to test that out as an alternative.
