Google is cracking down on affiliate/internet marketers again. According to the AdWords blog, types of websites that will be penalized with low landing page quality scores include:

* Data collection sites that offer free gifts, subscription services etc., in order to collect private information

Translation: Pure “name squeeze” pages are likely to be penalized.

* Arbitrage sites that are designed for the sole purpose of showing ads

If Google can have ads splattered all over the search results page, what’s wrong with a little arbitrage?

* Malware sites that knowingly or unknowingly install software on a visitor’s computer

This one we can understand. No argument here.

On top of that, the following sites are also at risk:

1. eBook sites that show frequent ads

I’m not exactly sure what they mean by frequent ads. AdSense? Banners? What about non-ebook sites with frequent ads?

2. ‘Get rich quick’ sites

Who decides what’s “quick”? What about sites that are just teaching you how to “get rich” without the “quick” part? I guess something like the Rich Jerk would set off this flag.

3. Comparison shopping sites

Are they REALLY going to ban sites like shopping.com from advertising on AdWords? I guess ban is not the right word. Are they going to raise the bids to $10 for these shopping comparison sites?

4. Travel aggregators

What about Orbitz? Or Expedia?

I have more questions than they have answers. You should invest more time at this point in Yahoo and MSN’s PPC services. Google should stop policing and let the free markets reign.
