I saw all the buzz about Amazon’s new Kindle ebook reader today.

The Marketing of Kindle

There is a video preview of the device and what it does over at the Amazon site. For a new device like this, it’s a great way to get a feel for what it is and what it does. There are also testimonials from a number of different authors - Toni Morrison, Guy Kawasaki, Michael Lewis, James Patterson, Neil Gaiman, Daniel Handler and Anita Diamant. Then of course, there’s the clip from Jeff Bezos himself.

There is also a PR blitz with articles in the major magazines and tech blogs. Engadget had a preview post about Kindle over a year ago.

Reasons Why I Might Buy The Kindle

1. I like to read a lot. I like to read when I’m out and about. This seems like a convenient way of not having to lug around a whole bunch of books.

2. I like the wireless feature of downloading books. This would be great when you’re stuck waiting for a flight at an airport.

3. The E-Ink technology means long battery life - but color is still a few years away.

4. Can combine books and audiobooks in one device - it can play MP3 files.

Reasons Why I Won’t Buy The Kindle

1. I can only buy books through Amazon.

2. I can’t download my own collection of PDF books to read on it.

3. It’s still too pricey. I could spend $400 on a lot of books.

4. I think the pricing of the books are too high.

5. There’s no web browser. Why do I have to pay to read blogs?

6. The design leaves much to be desired - looks like something from the 80’s.

More reasons against buying it than for it. With the $399 price tag (not including the cost to buy the books to read on it), I might just wait a while.
