I got an email this morning from Spry where I have a VPS hosting account. Apparently their billing system was breached and some user information may have been compromised. You can read up on all the gory details on their blog.

Although I’m not happy that someone may have stolen my passwords, I am impressed with the way Spry is handling this and their level of transparency. If your hosting company had a security lapse like this one, would they even tell you about it?

(Side note: Try not to use the same passwords everywhere - i.e. Paypal, hosting account, email, forums. If your one password gets stolen, ALL your accounts will get compromised. If you need a tool to manage all your passwords, I recommend Roboform.)

This is something that you should consider when you are choosing a hosting company. Don’t just go for the cheapest price. Make sure that they are someone that you would trust.
