Secret To Get On The First Page Of Google
Google Trends is a great free resource if you want to watch for seasonal trends. Do a product name search and you can see which time of the year searches peak for it.
I did a bit of research to see if there is a trend towards more people getting interested in making money online through internet marketing. So I entered the terms internet marketing, make money online, and internet business.
It looks like searches for internet business and internet marketing have been declining over the past 4 years while searches for make money online have been increasing slightly.

The surprising part to me is the countries where most of these searches are coming from. The top three countries where people are searching for ways to make money online are Malaysia, Singapore and South Africa. Not surprising, given the growing number of blogs focused on making money online from those countries. And since I grew up in Malaysia, I know from first hand experience that there are a lot of very creative, enterprising and hardworking folks there.

Given the advantage of the exchange rate and the fact that a lot of affiliate marketing companies are still paying out in US dollars, it’s not difficult to see the attraction of internet/affiliate marketing for people who live in those countries.
Here’s another way to spot trends.
Let’s look at some of the US presidential candidates - Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Ron Paul, Mike Huckabee, and Mitt Romney. We can look at the trends of people searching for information or news about them online.

As you can see, Mike Huckabee is getting a surge recently from the extra news exposure. But it looks like it’s Ron Paul’s supporters who are the most internet savvy. Or that a lot of people are curious about him.
Anyway, back to marketing, you can use Google Trends to estimate search volumes by comparing different search terms. Although they don’t show you the absolute numbers, you can still get an idea based on estimates of sheer volume alone. When you are researching a market, you can compare the relative search volumes between different markets.
Another way you can use Google Trends is for adjusting your PPC campaigns. Try out searches for different generic product categories like dieting, flower delivery (tends to peak around Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day - go ahead, check it out), NFL, MLB, NBA, etc.
