The nice thing about WP is the sheer number of themes that are freely available out there. There are a few theme repositories where you can download the theme that fits your fancy.
Before you start
Most free themes can be used out of the box, but if you really want to customize things to get the look that you want, there are a couple of skills that are good to have.
1. Photoshop - You may need to change the graphics and add your own to the theme. It’s good to know the basics of doing that with Photoshop.
2. CSS - Knowledge of CSS will help when it comes to modifying the template files.
Other pointers
Things often break after the installation of a new theme. Sidebar items go missing and may need to be re-inserted. You may need to insert function calls to any plugins that you have where necessary. You’ll also want to make sure that the theme works with the version of WP that you are currently using.
The best bet is to back up all your files before proceeding so that you have a working version to fall back to.
Widgets
Not all themes work with widgets, so if you’re a fan of them, make sure the theme supports them.
If you have no idea how to do any of the above, then your best bet is to hire someone to do it for you.
So… how do you like my new theme?
