Can someone tell me what’s the point of Twitter? Is it merely a waste of time?

I can see how it could benefit A-listers who can garner a large following. Everytime a blog post is updated, you can tweet about it. This could drive traffic to your blog from others who are constantly on Twitter or have some sort of widget that alerts every time someone you’re following tweets.

Otherwise, it’s really a waste of time. Most of the people who are using Twitter are social media/Web 2.0 type follks who tend to be online all the time and want to be connected within their circle. Checking up on some names that I recognize, I see that they have abandoned their Twitter account since the last time it was updated was months ago. As I mentioned, folks who are really into social media have their Twitter accounts updated the most. This include the SEO types as well.

Since trying it out a few days ago, I have followed a bunch of folks (some I know of and others I picked randomly). I have a grand total of 5 followers including Guy Kawasaki and Liz Strauss.
