Is this the best idea Google can come up with to squeeze more money out of AdWords advertisers? If you have logged in to your AdWords account recently, you would have noticed a new feature called “Automatic Matching” which is turned on by default for search network campaigns.
This means that your ad could be showing even for keywords that you are not bidding on. You should leave this feature on if you trust that Google knows better than you do on what keywords will convert for you.
To disable this option, you have to go into the “Edit Campaign” page and uncheck the box that selects the automatic matching option. It’s under the Advanced Options section.
I think Google is trying to cash in on newbies who don’t really know what they are doing. You are better off doing your own keyword research.
It looks like I’m not the only one who doesn’t like this feature:

I like the term “laziness tax” which indeed it is if you are too lazy to do your own keyword research.
