I decided to take the plunge and bought the ASUS EEE 4G Surf laptop which I intend to use for traveling. If you are not familiar with this laptop, in reality it is an ultraportable as it weighs only about 2 pounds. But don’t let this fool you. There is still plenty of functionality in this little laptop.
I ordered mine from Tiger Direct and got it in a few days. Once I opened up the package, I had the computer powered up and connected to my WiFi network within minutes. The setup up was painless. For connectivity, you also have the option of an Ethernet port in addition to WiFi.
It runs on an 800 MHz Intel Celeron processor with 512 MB RAM. The system comes loaded up with Linux and already has all the necessary programs installed – Firefox for web browsing and Open Office for all my work needs. With Open Office, I can view any document that is created with Microsoft Word. The PDF reader is also installed, so I can easily read PDF documents as well. I am actually composing this post using the Open Office Writer which has a PDF converter included.
There are no moving parts on this laptop except for the cooling fan. There is no hard disk and as the name suggests, it comes with 4G of flash memory. There are 3 USB ports so adding a mouse or external flash memory is not a problem. There is also a slot for SD memory. The machine runs cool enough that I can actually set it on my lap without getting cooked. There is also a monitor port that I can connect to a larger screen if I’m working at home.
I think the battery life is about 3 hours but you can stretch it if you turn off the WiFi connection and reduce the brightness of the screen. Another thing I like is the small charger that comes with it. With most other laptops, the chargers adds almost another pound to the weight you have to carry around with you.
Before I ordered this laptop, I went on Amazon and read all the reviews about it, both the good and the bad. The keyboard is a bit small if you have big fat fingers. But you should expect this for something that is about the size of a thin hardcover book. I also found the touch pad button a bit stiff so I use a mini optical USB mouse. Basically, at about $360 this is a great buy if you have the right expectations. This machine is not meant to be a desktop replacement but rather as a machine that you can take with you wherever you go.
Here’s the product link at Amazon. You can read all the reviews there too.
