As an internet marketer who is constantly researching and learning, it is easy to get into information overload. Once you sit down at your computer and start using the internet, there are a ton of distractions that are only a click away. You can read forum posts, blogs, check up on stats, check your email, get on Squidoo, Twitter, surf StumbleUpon, read the news, etc. The list goes on and on.

The keys to mastering information overload are organization and planning. Let’s tackle organization first. The reason you want to get organized is to save you time. If you spend a lot of time looking for something whether it’s an email or a PLR file that buried somewhere in your hard drive, you are going to be less productive.

Organization

The best way to start organizing is to create structure. In your email program, you can create separate folders for different topics or people. If you use Outlook, you can also create subfolders. For example, you could have a folder for “Swipe File” and under that subfolders named for different internet marketers. You can then store all their emails in separate folders so that when the time comes that you want to refer to something someone wrote, you can easily find it.

The other area that needs organization is your hard drive. Don’t just dump every single PDF file you have into the My Documents folder. Take the time to create separate folders and subfolders for the main topics that you have. It could be for example, folders for PPC, list building, ezine advertising, etc.

You should also organize your accounting. Make sure you keep track of your cash flow. Do you know where your money is spent every month? What are your sources of online income? It is easy to spend $10 to $20 per month on subscription based services such as membership sites. If you have more than a few of these, the costs can really add up and eat into your profits. You can create your own system to keep track of cash flow. It could be using a program like Quicken or you could just create your own spreadsheet.

In the next post, I will talk more about “Planning” so stay tuned.
