One of the most important things you can do as an internet marketer is to invest in yourself and continually improve your skills. In this post, I would like to highlight some of the most important skills that I think you should have as an internet marketer.

1. List building - if you can build a list, then you have an asset that you can tap over and over again. Although a lot of people are hung up on the size of the list, a more important issue is the responsiveness of the list. Which would you prefer? A small list of buyers or a large list of lurkers? One could argue that you don’t need a list for everything and you are absolutely correct.

If you are focused on affiliate marketing, you could get away without a list if you’re well-versed in PPC. However, all that traffic from PPC is “one time” traffic and you have to keep paying for it. If you’re building a list at the same time you’re sending PPC traffic to your landing page, you’re chanelling some of that short term traffic into longer term prospects that you can market to in the future.

2. Copywriting - the ability to write copy that converts is always a valuable skill to have. It comes in useful for sales letters, for PPC ads, for emails, newsletters, you name it. Since the Internet is primarily driven by the written word (although audio and video applications are growing), it stands to reason that if you have convincing copy, then you’ll increase your conversions. In general, the ability to write well is something that will help you if you are a creator of information products.

3. General webmastering - these group of skills include knowing how to set up a website, simple graphics skills, setting up web hosting, etc. In my experience, I have found that graphics skills in particular, i.e. familiarity with Photoshop, have been really useful since I can save a lot of money by designing product images and landing pages on my own. They have also helped me raise some of the startup money that I needed for my online business. In the early days, I offered my design services to other marketers who needed help coming up with ebook covers, software box images, etc.

Another benefit of not being graphically challenged is that I can have sites and pages looking EXACTLY the way I like it. I can design my own banners and landing pages. Finally, I would also throw in knowledge of SEO as part of webmastering.

What else can you add to the list?
