You will hear many gurus tell you to stay away from the internet marketing or make money online niche even though they are in it themselves. They say that it is overcrowded and there are too many websites already out there that you would not be able to make any money. Right up front, I will tell you that this is a myth. It is true that the internet marketing niche is very popular and the reason is because there is money to be made in it.

The fact is that there will always be people looking for information on how to make money online. Trust me, this market is huge. With the economy in a downturn, this opportunity is greater than ever. The issue is not with the choice of the niche but the system you have to attack it. Before you start, you should have a plan. Write down ideas of what sub-topics within internet marketing that you will focus on. Do not limit yourself at this point to things that you have experience with. Just brainstorm and write down all your ideas.

Next you will have to make an inventory of the skills you have. If you don’t know how to set up a website or a blog, then you will have to find someone to do it for you. The same goes for having an autoresponder set up. The point of this exercise is to determine what you can do yourself and what you need to outsource. This will help you plan how much startup money you need. The idea that you can start an online business with no money is also a myth. You will always need some money to invest in webhosting and domain names to begin with.

My advice is to do as the gurus do but not always as they say. Pick a few gurus and sign up for their lists. Make sure you create a separate email folder for each one and store all their autoresponder messages. In this way, you can refer to them later and learn what works. You will also find out what they are promoting.

Finally, the key to success in the internet marketing niche is building reputation and trust. People are looking for information from folks that they can trust. If that comes across in your message, you will not have to resort to a lot of hard selling. One big mistake that I see a lot of newbies make is to create a free blog with Blogger and fill it up with Google AdSense and banner ads all over. Let me tell you this is not the way to do it and save you some time and effort.

Internet marketing is not complicated but it is not easy either. If you are persistent in learning the fundamentals and are committed to following your plan, you will eventually find success.
